Trauma, as defined by Trauma-Informed Care in Behavioral Health Services, encompasses one-time, multiple, or long-lasting repetitive events that can have long-term psychological impacts on an individual. According to the Anxiety & Depression Association of America, traumatic events can alter the function of the amygdala and the hippocampus, leading to a heightened sense of anxiety and unpredictable memory, respectively. Additionally, trauma causes chronic stress that can result in muscle tension, body aches, and digestive issues, all of which can reduce quality of life.

Unresolved trauma can severely impair daily functioning, but Mission Connection says that it can be treated with a combination of a trauma-informed approach and the appropriate psychiatric modalities. These treatments are available at its outpatient center in Arlington, which can provide flexible care that accommodates the patient’s schedule.

“Trauma is a heavy burden that many individuals carry, often silently. By addressing trauma in an outpatient setting, patients can progress in their recovery while staying connected to their daily routines and support networks, fostering resilience and long-term healing,” explains a spokesperson for the organization.

To facilitate recovery and resilience, Mission Connection’s trauma-focused therapists help patients process unresolved trauma using evidence-based approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and exposure therapy—all methods that studies have shown can reduce symptoms of PTSD and related conditions, including anxiety. The modality chosen will depend on results from the client’s preliminary mental health assessment, but treatment may also be adjusted as they make progress.

For Mission Connection’s outpatient programs, patients have the choice of receiving care in person or online; for the latter option, therapists deliver treatments virtually through telehealth. Those who require more care can also consider the treatment center’s intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) and partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), which are designed for moderate or severe cases of trauma that necessitate more frequent and intensive treatments.
